Monopoly – A Family Game?

Most people learn to play Monopoly when they’re very young, usually in the confines of their own home, taught how to trade property and charge fees by their parents. Is Monopoly really a family game however, as it teaches people the cut-throats practices of ruthless business in order to squeeze a player out of the game with bankruptcy and sky high rents. Whilst many may argue that this is how the world works is it really a suitable game to teach our children?

Well ultimately people can take away whatever they like from any experience. Monopoly was originally released as ‘The Landlord’s Game’ to show people the flaws in the property market and the capitalist model of the world. Just as many people may walk away from their first game of Monopoly thinking ‘wow I’d love to be a rich person running the world’, similar numbers will also walk away thinking ‘surely there’s a better way we can run things’ and of course let’s no forget the majority whose only thought is ‘what a fun game, when can we play again?’

The beauty of Monopoly is that it’s a very adaptable game suitable for any occasion. Sure if you’re playing it with your family then it can be a sedate affair, saved for rainy Sunday afternoons or for when Uncle Pete has passed out after one too many whiskies at Christmastime, but it can also be so much more. Many people like to play Monopoly for more serious stakes, putting a cash value (such as a penny) on every pound in the game, so the person with all the money left at the end gets paid a dividend from all the losers.
